Question by Amy: How can I make a solar powered water purification system?
I need to design and make a water purification system powered by solar energy using household materials. I’m really not sure how to go about this and any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

Use a mirror to focus heat and kill all the germs by boiling the water. It’s the simplest option, and it works!

Question by Boilermaker1: Is there a way to clean water stains from a painted drywall ceiling?
I have brown water stains on the ceiling in my kitchen caused by a leak around a vent stack on the roof. I have repaired the leak and now need to clean up the evidence before we sell the home. I really don’t want to paint the whole ceiling as it goes into the breakfast nook and living room. I also don’t want to deal witn trying to match the paint and do a touch up. I put straight bleach on it and it removed 70% of the stain. Any ideas will be appreciated. Thanks.

Question by ninety_sixmustang: What is the best water filter for a 40 gal turtle tank?
I’m starting to plan a new home for my 4 inch long red-eared slider. Right now it’s in a 5.5 gal tank. I’m planning on getting him (or her) a 40 gallon breeder tank. What is the best filter for this tank? I was looking at the Fluval 205. Is this going to filter the water well? (110 gph, up to 40 gallons) Are there any other filters that anybody else uses? I’m trying to spend as little as possible obviously but will not pass up a good filter either. It also loves to dig, what is a good substrate to use so that he can’t dig into it? Right now I have small pebbles on the bottom of the tank with a big plastic log for basking.

you can use a submersable filter or the fluval is a good one as well . Your not going to have the tank full to the top with water or your turtle will get out

Question by Privatize: Where can I find out more about water purification?
In doing research for some fiction I’m working on, the subject of water purification is sort of coming up more, and I’d like to know more about the water purification plants in the United States. The internet research I’ve done is leading me nowhere, and I’d like to find a book on the subject of water purification plants and/or the subject of purification in general. Any ideas, books, or website suggestions?

Water purification gets down to basically pulling other ions off of the water molecule. Nothing more interesting than that.. if you want to write about water purification, do it on Deer Island in Boston. Cleaned up the harbor pretty good.

Question by Dannae Morgan: why wont my cat drink water without food in it?
My mom and I recently took in a kitten that one of our neighbors owned. She gave the kittens hard food with water in it (just a bit to make it soft), and she gave them water. And we’ve had her for 2-4 days, and she just wont drink pure water. BUT she’ll drink water if it has a bunch of food in it. any ideas on how to make her drink from her water bowl?

Answer by Stasia
That is hard to get them to do that if they just don’t want to. What I found worked for my 6 cats is that I would mix half water, and half catmilk that I got at the pet store to get them used to “drinking”
Now, most of them are fine with just straight water, but I have one finicky one that still only wants the “catmilk”, and another two who prefer “running” water from either the sink or the water fountain bowl.
Don’t worry, it gets better and easier as they get a little older. When they are a little older, I found most cats prefer the dry food over the wet food on a daily basis. Just keep the bowl of water available for them, they will drink when they want it.

Question by starzie: How can I clean water soluble painted walls?
I live in a rented property and I keep my birds in the spare room. I went to clean the walls the other day as all sorts can get splattered on them and as it turns out, the paint is water soluble so it just came off on the sponge. Is there anyway I can get this cleaned without taking off any more paint? Repainting would be an option, but it would be a pain seeing as I have no colour match! Thanks.

Answer by Bonno
3 swipes with a damp cloth….you are actually wetting the paint & wiping a layer off. Let it re-dry & do it again. If it is a large area – re-paint

Question by jg: How to fix a leaky water filter?
I have an Everpure H104 water filter installed under my sink that the previous owners installed. Has worked great so far. Changed the filter a year or so ago with no problems. Just swapped in a new filter, and the new one leaks. It seems like the impact of the water when I am done filling my glass forces a few drops out of the top somewhere.
I’ve placed a pan under it for now, but am going to tackle it again this weekend. Anyone have this happen to them and want to share their experience? I have the 800 number from Everpure.com but am curious to hear your experience with your filter, especially fixing a leaky filter.
Thanks!

care full attention must be taken when closing the filter after filter medium replacement , u just need to replace the rubber “O” ring , the previous one is already become unusable of there would be miss fitting of the ring while closing / righting ,
purchase a new rubber O ring or proper size rubber Gasket. u may also use Teflon PTFE for this , but rubber is best, available from every big hardware shop

Question by Dina S: Anyone know how to build a water purification system at home?
Does anyone know how to build a water purification system using really simple or cheap things? A system that can remove odor, taste and other particles in order to make the water drinkable? Help would be really appreciated. Thank you.
It’s for a chemistry project in school. So i have to do it from home, and if i do buy anything, it has to be under 10 dollars.

Water purification is a complex undertaking. In industry these systems have a of engineering in them. You would need ion exchange and carbon bed to purify or a reverse osmosis system. You would be better off renting these from an industrial supply company.
